Bodrum – in the past – Galikarnas – is situated in the palm bay on the south-eastern shore of Aegean sea. Straight from the sea an ancient fortress stands on the small peninsula.

In past Bodrum, former Gelikarnas, was in Dorian league. After the conquest of the Asia Minor by Persians in the 6th century B.C. the city became the capital of Persian tsar in Kary. The famous native of Gelikarnas the ancient historian Herodotus told us that in 480 B.C. the regent of Kary Artemisya I completely destroyed fleet of Rodos.
In 350 B.C. the great burial-vault for the Kary tsar Mausol was built. It considered to be one of the seven great wonders of ancient world. Mausoleum amazed the travelers not with its size (the height of the building was 50 meters) but with beautiful sculptures of people and animals and skillfully made white marble bas-reliefs. Now there is the world famous museum in Mausoleum where the most ancient ship remains are exhibited.
20 years after Mausol’s death the city was conquered by Alexander the Great. Later Galikarnas lost its glory because regents was not able to protect the city from invasions of Arabic tribes and pirates.
In 1402 knights of the St. John took the city. By that time the mausoleum was partly destroyed by an earthquake: the colonnade and the pyramid above it fell down. Marble and granite blocks of Mausoleum were used while constructing the castle of St. John in 1494-1522 which is still in Bodrum and considered the symbol of the city. The sculptures which decorated the mausoleum now can be seen in British Museum in London.
Contemporary Bodrum is a resort town with white houses, many remote and the famous street of bars. It is the favorite resort place for tourists from all over the world and the source of inspiration for Turkish and European bohemia.
