'Side' meant granite. That was a symbol of fertility. The history of the town started in the 7th century  B.C. when the first settlements were founded here by Greek colonists. After the city was conquered by pirates it became the slave-trade centre of the southern Mediterranean. In times of the Romans it was turned in the center of art and culture. In those days  famous monuments of architecture and unique works of sculpture were created.

Many of them  exist still. They is, for instance, an ancient theatre of 20 thousand persons capacity, temples of Athens and Apollo, Necropolis, Roman terms where the archeological museum is located now.
